An Aging America

America is aging -- a recent Census Bureau article stated that there will be more older adults than kids by the year 2035. Demographic projections based on the Census Bureaus data show that people age 65 and over are expected to number 78.0 million, while children under age 18 will number 76.4 million.

Baby Boomers are not the factor to a graying population -- declining fertility rates also play a role in this increase in older adults. However, by the year 2020, all of Americas Baby Boomers will be 65 and older. This marks an aging America, with older Americans making up 21 percent of the population, up from 15 percent today.

Implications of a growing population of older adults include greater demands in healthcare, living facilities, social security, in-home caregiving, and more. Learn more about changing demographics from the Census Bureau here.
